The 2019 Spring Meeting, our first event of the year, was held at Copthorne Golf Club on Thursday, 9 May. 87 ladies from 22 clubs playing in teams of three started off the first and tenth tees in lovely sunshine. Sadly, this was not to continue as the forecasted heavy showers soon arrived and it was then a day for umbrellas and waterproofs.
Lynne Whalley, Ladies’ Captain of Copthorne was welcomed by our President, Sylvia Huggair. Lynne, together with Gisela & Karen, organised a wine raffle for her charity, Manor Green College which is a dynamic and inspirational West Sussex secondary school for students between the ages of 11-19 who experience a wide range of learning difficulties. £250 was raised and members were thanked for their generosity.
Thanks were extended to both the starters Steve and Bob. All the staff at Copthorne could not have been more helpful and the caterers produced a delicious carvery with a selection of desserts, a meal much appreciated by everyone.
A great deal of forward planning, hard work and organisation goes into making a successful day and gratitude was expressed to the SLC&SGA Committee, especially our Hon. Sec., Elaine Fell.
Today’s competition was a stableford played off full handicap with two scores to count on each hole and congratulations go to the winning team of Jane Bowers and Jan Hobden from Royal Ashdown Forest and Sue Walkden from Copthorne who had a great score of 80 points. They were 4 points ahead of the team in second place – Sue Sexton, Gill Maynard and Elaine Hayhurst from Willingdon.
