After weeks of dry weather and burnt fairways, we arrived at Sand Martins to a very stormy looking sky! We had a very nice sandwich lunch accompanied by a huge downpour of rainwhich looked like it was in for the day. Fortunately, it eased, and we were able to start the match in dry conditions.
Sand Martins is a course of two complete different 9’s. The front nine being peppered with ditches and ponds, whereas the back nine had previously been a quarry, so the terrain was totally different and more forgiving. It was lovely being able to play off green fairways as they also have fairways watering.
We received great hospitality from the (Past) Lady Captain of Berkshire as well as the staff at Sand Martins. The food was excellent and as much as our teamgave their all, the result was in favour of the Berkshire players, with a 5.5 to 2.5 defeat for Sussex.
