Match vs Sussex Golf Captains

On Monday July 1stthe SLC & SGA played in the invitation from the SGC to the annual greensomes match at Haywards Heath Golf Club.  This competition is always very competitive and enormously enjoyed by both teams and this year was no exception – the 45thyear it has been played. This occasion marks the continuing friendship between the two Associations.

The course was in excellent condition and it was a day of glorious sunshine. Some team members from both sides even enjoyed an ice cream at the half way hut! Everyone enjoyed their matches, some of which were very close. There was plenty of banter between the ladies and the gentlemen both on and off the course.

After a delicious meal and a few glasses of wine the thanks were given. The Captains welcomed the Haywards Heath Captain, Les Anderson and the Lady Captain, Janice Brooks.   Both Associations were delighted to welcome Carole Lee again whose father Joe, founded the SGC and organised the first mixed match for which he donated the trophy in 1975 and which has been played for each year since.

Phil Williamson (SGC Captain) presented Anne with a lovely engraved vase to mark the occasion and Anne responded by presenting Phil with an engraved tankard as a thank you to the SGC’s for their hospitality and as a momento of the occasion..

The announcement of the result is always eagerly anticipated.  This year the match was halved.  Anne pointed out that as the ladies won last year and currently hold the trophy it should replicate the Ryder Cup and so the ladies should retain the trophy for another year.  She therefore asked Phil to present her with the trophy accordingly. This was very well received by the ladies with great applause whilst the SGC expressed some doubts but honourably decided that we should keep the trophy but would have to be responsible for the engraving and keep it well polished for them ready for next year!
