Match v Surrey – 29th Sept 2025

Sep 30, 2025 | Latest News

This week we played our final match of the season against Surrey at Littlehampton GC.  After a very tense late night watching the European team (finally) clinch victory in the Ryder Cup, suffice to say most of us were tired and emotionally drained!  Lots of sparking golf on display over the weekend to demonstrate how it should be done…… but could we channel our inner Rosie or Shane with our putters or get backspin on our approach shots!? Captain of Sussex Captains, Richard Jays, kindly volunteered to be our Starter, and he did so with great aplomb in his Captain’s jacket. The course looked glorious in the sunshine, albeit the fairways still struggling a little from the lack of rain this year.  We couldn’t have asked for a nicer day to play at the seaside, with virtually no wind it was a rare treat.

With 9 pairs aside, the match was keenly contested, with most of the games going to the 16th and 17th holes.  The final result sadly didn’t deliver our home advantage, with Surrey clinching victory 5½-3½. Everybody reported having lots of fun in their matches, which is what our Association is all about – meeting and playing with like-minded people.  The club house team looked after us wonderfully well in the newly refurbished bar and restaurant – an excellent carvery and delicious dessert were both well received with lots of clean plates.  Thank you to everyone at the club for your warm welcome and hospitality, the ladies from Surrey were all very complimentary about their day.

Huge thank you to everyone who played in the match (too many to mention, see team sheet!) and thank you to everybody who has represented us in the four matches we have played this season.  Overall tally 2 wins, 2 losses – over to you for next season Vice Captain Carol!!
